What is Hypochlorous Acid?
Hypochlorous acid, commonly abbreviated as HOCl, is a powerful antimicrobial substance naturally produced by the human immune system. White blood cells generate HOCl to neutralise bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores during the body’s innate immune response. This biological origin is central to HOCl’s unique profile: it delivers rapid microbial kill rates while remaining non toxic, non irritating and environmentally benign when correctly formulated.
From a chemical perspective, HOCl is a weak acid formed when chlorine dissolves in water. Unlike traditional chlorine based disinfectants such as sodium hypochlorite bleach, HOCl exists predominantly in a neutral molecular form. This allows it to penetrate microbial cell walls far more efficiently, resulting in faster and broader spectrum antimicrobial action at significantly lower concentrations.
Modern HOCl technology focuses on controlled electrochemical or electrolytic processes that precisely regulate pH, oxidation reduction potential and free available chlorine. When these parameters are optimised, HOCl demonstrates exceptional efficacy against pathogens while breaking down safely into saline solution after use. In the United Kingdom and European Union, hypochlorous acid products used for disinfection are regulated primarily under the Biocidal Products Regulation (EU BPR 528/2012), which has been retained in UK law following Brexit. This framework governs the approval of active substances and finished biocidal products to ensure they are effective, safe for users, and environmentally responsible.
HOCl used as a disinfectant falls under Product Type categories such as PT1 (human hygiene), PT2 (surface disinfection) and PT4 (food and feed area disinfection). For lawful supply, the active substance must be supported by an approved dossier demonstrating toxicological safety, environmental impact and antimicrobial efficacy. Finished products must then be authorised or supplied under transitional provisions where applicable.
In addition to regulatory approval, credible HOCl solutions are validated against recognised European Norm standards. These include EN 1276 and EN 13727 for bactericidal activity, EN 14476 for virucidal efficacy and EN 1650 for fungicidal performance. Medical and clinical applications may also require CE or UKCA marking under medical device regulations, depending on intended use.
